Bad Breath Treatment is Better Left To The Dentist

Mouth fresheners are great, especially if you like flavorsome foods cooked with onions and garlic. Friends and family rarely want to tell you that you have bad breath. Mouth fresheners that you can buy without prescriptions, do not constitute effective bad breath treatment.

If the problem recurs often, then treatment is required. A dentist will need to make a thorough examination of your mouth, to determine whether you have halitosis, before deciding on a course of bad breath treatment to deal with your symptoms.

Drinking water regularly or chewing gum may help to deal with a dry mouth. A dry mouth has malodorous substances in exhaled breath. Children are often guilty of poor brushing, though adults can also be careless with dental hygiene. Removing the stale coating from the tongue and dislodging pieces of food stuck between teeth, are other personal habits which may suffice by way of bad breath treatment.

Your dentist can also remove accumulated plaque and deal with diseases of the gums. He may also prescribe antibiotics if necessary as a form of bad breath treatment.

Other Bad Breath Treatment

Occasionally dentists cannot treat all cases of halitosis. Gum diseases can be another problem whereby a referral to a specialist is advised as not all bad breath problems begin in the mouth. A dentist may send a patient with halitosis to a physician to deal with a systemic cause.

Ketones are chemicals, excreted through urine, perspiration and through the exhaled breath. Ketones build up in blood to levels which result in halitosis if a person has diabetes, or has inadequate carbohydrate intake. Ketosis can be life threatening, so halitosis may be an indication of a serious medical condition therefore every case of persistent bad breath deserves professional attention by visiting your dentist.

Bad breath treatment is quite simple, once the underlying cause has been determined. It can recur if a patient does not follow prescriptions, or change personal habits which lead to the problem. Bad breath may develop at any time, so checking regularly with your friends and family is advised. If you ask them they are more likely to feel comfortable giving you an answer, than telling you upfront.

Regular visits to your dentist are also advised, as so many people feel that bad breath is due to the food they eat or have eaten and that a simple mouth spray will suffice. If there is an underlying problem then your dentist or specialist is the only person who will be able to give you a professional diagnosis.
